Truth be told, skin tags can be an unsightly and irritating skin condition. They can even become worse if the skin growths get inflamed.

If you have skin tags, you are probably curious whether they’re inflamed or not. In this article, we will focus on important information about inflamed skin tags along with what can be done about them.

Differentiating Between a Normal and an Inflamed Skin Tag

In order to identify an inflamed or irritated skin tag, it is vital to first know and recognize the characteristics of a skin tag that is not inflamed.

A normal skin tag has a normal skin color and is a growth that usually appears where the skin rubs against each other. The common body parts where skin tags appear are areas such as the neck, torso, armpit, groin area, knees, back, and below the breasts. They can also develop on other parts of the skin such as the eyelids and the face.

Skin tags tend to develop more in adults than in children. However, it is worth noting that anyone can have a skin tag regardless of age, gender, and race.

Skin tags are not dangerous and usually don’t cause pain or discomfort. However, they can be unsightly and irritating, and they may even cause mental discomfort in some people. Removal can be an option by those whose self-esteem has been affected by skin tags.

On the other hand, skin tags that are inflamed are more irritating, annoying, and unsightly. Usually, a skin tag can get inflammation when it rubs itself against something. For instance, inflamed skin tags can occur when the growths snag themselves against clothing. A skin tag can also become inflamed if trapped in jewelry.

For other cases, twisting of the tag can cause it to become inflamed. All these cases lead to the bursting of blood vessels which can cause the skin tag to become inflamed.

It is easy to identify a skin tag that is inflamed by just looking at it. In most cases, an irritated skin tag will turn red and develop a different color than the surrounding skin. You can also identify this skin tag growth by noticing the pain. Due to inflammation, you will experience some pain and itchiness.

However, this does not call for much concern. It just causes physical irritation which may prompt some people to remove skin growth.

Treating an Inflamed Skin Tag

Treating an inflamed or irritated skin tag is easy as there are several treatment options, with some working well than others. Additionally, it is important to know what not to do when your skin tag is inflamed.

Methods for Treating Inflamed Skin Tag

After noticing that your skin tag is inflamed, it is best to care for it. Below are some methods for treating your inflamed skin tag:

1. Freezing

One of the best ways to treat a skin tag that is inflamed is by freezing it. This is usually done through cryotherapy. By using freezing as a treatment option, you will be able to instantly get rid of your inflamed skin tags.

The only downside of this treatment is that it is likely to leave a scar where the tag has been removed. Due to this, most people prefer using natural remedies that don’t cause any damage to the skin.

2. Tea Tree Oil

One of the natural remedies for getting rid of skin tags is by using tea tree oil. Thanks to its anti-fungal properties, the oil can cause skin tags to dry off until they fall off eventually. Despite being affordable, this treatment option is very easy to use. You simply need to massage the oil to the growth prior to going to bed.

You need to do this as often as possible while waiting for the tag to disappear which may take about a week. Don’t stop applying the oil even if you noticed that the tags have disappeared. This helps reduce the chance of them reoccurring again.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

This type of vinegar is an effective treatment for numerous ailments including skin tags. It is a treatment method that differs in application to the above treatment option but is not very challenging to apply. To apply, simply immerse a cotton ball in the solution then place it on the tag.

Afterward, wrap a bandage to clasp the cotton ball in place so that the skin tag soaks for up to an hour. Make sure to do this several times a day until you see that the growth has disappeared. With this treatment method, it will take around several weeks for the skin tag to completely disappear.

Do take note that this method may cause slight irritation on the skin due to the acid. Fortunately, skin irritation will reduce after a while.

4. Garlic

Using garlic as a treatment option can also be challenging. Nonetheless, the process is not very difficult to apply. You just need to pound the garlic and stroke it on the inflamed skin tag. Afterward, wrap a bandage in order to hold the pounded garlic to skin tag throughout the night.

Repeat this process as you wait for the tag to disappear which may take several weeks.

Final Thoughts

There is not much difference between an inflamed and an ordinary skin tag. Similarly, the process for removing a skin tag that has an inflammation is not very different from that of removing a normal skin tag.

However, you need to check with a dermatologist to check if the growth is benign and not cancerous growth. Fortunately, most cases of skin tags are benign growths.

On the other hand, very rarely do inflamed skin growths become cancerous or malignant. If this is the case, make sure you get the tag removed as soon as possible.
